How do lasers work?

Lasers incorporate innovate cosmetic technology that allows cosmetic surgeons to correct a wide variety of different skin conditions and concerns. The CO2 laser is the gold standard in laser resurfacing and collagen stimulation. It works by creating organized columns of destruction in the skin that target poor skin cells. This leaves room for healthy, collagen-rich skin cells to regenerate and, over time, help to restore the lost volume and tightness we desire in our skin.

Ablative vs. Nonablative

All lasers fall into two categories: ablative and nonablative. Recovery time from each type is minimal, with the majority of patients able ot resume regular activities immediately following the procedure. Ablative lasers, like the CO2 laser, target the surface of the skin, removing damage and impurities. Nonablative lasers target underneath the surface layer.

Is it painful?

Fractionated CO2 laser treatments are considered to be the most invasive of laser treatments, with an average downtime of 5-10 days. CO2 laser is regarded as a safe and effective treatment to address signs of aging on the face and body for the most skin types, however, due to the prolonged period of healing and risk for post-imflammatory Hyperpigmentation, it is not recommended for darker skin tones.

Potential risk factors and temporary side effects include:

  • Mild or slight discomfort during treatment
  • Skin inflammation post-treatment
  • 5-10 days of skin redness and scabbing
  • Itching
  • Sensitivity to sunlight

How long does it take?

After a period of numbing with topical numbing cream (about 30 minutes), the laser treatment can take between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

How long until I see results?

You will see results 3-4 weeks after your treatment, with the most benefit becoming more apparent 3-6 months after your treatment. This depends on the severity of your skin condition before the procedure, and how many treatments you will need to get your desired result.
