How Stress Sucks the Life Out of Your Skin

Your alarm clock does not go off on time, so you skip your usual morning skincare routine to get the kids to the bus stop on time. Upon arriving at work, your boss announces that he needs a report from you by the end of the day. Later that afternoon, you get a call from your kids’ school that your youngest child isn’t feeling well. After multiple phone calls, you find a family member who can go to the school for you. You finally finish the report for your boss after five o’clock and rush home to make dinner. After helping the kids with their homework and getting them to bed, you take a quick shower, forgoing your usual skincare routine, and fall into bed yourself. Talk about a stressful day!

When we experience stress in our lives, we are affected at the time of the stress, with our stomach in knots, perhaps a throbbing headache, and even exhaustion from the emotional rollercoaster of it all. But did you know that stress can manifest itself in ways that continue to affect us far beyond the stress itself?

When you are stressed, your body releases hormones, including cortisol, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. These hormones ultimately lead to physical signs of the stress you experienced. One result is increased oil production, which can lead to clogged pores and the dreaded acne that follows! We tend to skip our normal skincare routines during stressful times, which gives the excess oil time to do even more damage.

These stress hormones also cause internal inflammation, which can manifest externally as skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis flare-ups. Not only does the inflammation exacerbate existing issues, but it can also make your skin more prone to reactions, creating other issues that never even existed for you before the stress.

We can’t always control the stress in our lives, but we can have some control over the resulting skin issues by taking a proactive approach with calming/clarifying skin treatments and a customized skincare routine.
